Commissions charged by Agents

There appears to be a situation whereby agents charge full Actra members one rate of commission and Apprentices a higher rate. Again, according to ACTRA, we are supposed to be treated the same.

We would respectfully suggest that ACTRA crack down on agents who charge Full members one commission rate and Apprentices another.

This would also stop the practice of agents favoring sending Apprentices and Cash background over Full members, who appear to be the ones complaining that Apprentices are taking their jobs.

However, this may be a moot point if the solutions we are proposing can be implemented.

PROGRESS REPORT posted July 17th 2003

It has become apparent from workshops held at the Actra Toronto Performer days that there is a level of discontent with many agents and their practices. A new committee has been formed at Actra to deal with Agent issues.

Ideally we would like to get the agents on board with this so that we are all, eventually, reading from the same book and that certain best practices are standardized throughout the industry. This would include the issue of commissions. There is also a problem of agents charging commissions on non-commissionable items, which needs to stop.

Suffice it to say, at this stage, that Actra is concerned with dubious practices among certain agents, and this committee is a first step towards rectifying these.

FURTHER PROGRESS REPORT February 2005

There is an information package from ACTRA Toronto's Agents' Issues Working Group entitled A Good Deal for You: Hiring the Right Agent on the Right Terms This is 18 pages of very useful information that illustrates the many pitfalls in agency contracts and what you should consider doing before signing on the dotted line. It is a PDF file and can be downloaded HERE. Right mouse click on the link and "Save Target As" if you want to download the file to read later. You will need Adobe Acrobat to read the file.
